What it is

Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like compound present in every cell, where it sits at the heart of mitochondrial ATP production and doubles as a fat-soluble antioxidant. Endogenous levels decline with age and with statin use, which is why CoQ10 briefs cluster around heart health, energy and healthy ageing.

Forms and sourcing

The standard material is ubiquinone, a stable orange crystalline powder produced by fermentation. Ubiquinol, the reduced form, commands a premium and needs careful handling as it oxidises on air exposure; stabilised grades and licensed material such as Kaneka ubiquinol are the reliable route. Both forms are fat-soluble, so the delivery format materially affects absorption.

Benefits and evidence

CoQ10 is among the most-studied non-vitamin actives, with research spanning cardiovascular function, statin-associated muscle symptoms and mitochondrial disorders. Typical study doses run 100–300 mg per day. Despite the breadth of research there are no authorised EFSA claims, so positioning must remain general.

Typical dosage and formats

Commercial inclusions run 30–200 mg per daily dose, with 100 mg the most common. Because absorption depends on fat, oil-suspended softgels are the gold-standard format; capsules and tablets work with solubilised or complexed grades. CoQ10’s strong colour needs accounting for in powders and gummies.

UK and EU regulatory position

Coenzyme Q10 is an established supplement ingredient in the UK and EU at customary doses, and standard fermentation-derived material is not treated as a novel food. There are no authorised EFSA health claims for CoQ10; on-pack heart or energy claims must instead be carried by actives with authorised claims, commonly thiamine for heart function or B vitamins for energy metabolism. Statin-interaction advisories are not required but many brands include a consult-your-doctor line, which we support at artwork review.
