What it is
Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a small American palm whose berries anchor men’s health briefs, principally prostate-comfort and hair formulations. Its proposed mechanism, inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, also explains its appearance in hair-retention products for both sexes.
Forms and sourcing
The studied material is a lipophilic berry extract standardised to 85–95% fatty acids and sterols, an oily substance suited to softgels; powdered grades on carriers serve capsule and tablet briefs at adjusted doses. Berry powder appears in value formulations at gram level. Sterol profile and fatty-acid specification separate credible material from bulk powder, and both appear on our specifications.
Benefits and evidence
The clinical literature centres on lower urinary tract symptoms in men, using 320 mg per day of lipophilic extract, with results that are mixed overall and better for the hexane or CO2 extracts actually studied. Hair applications rest on smaller trials. The mixed evidence and medicalised endpoints make measured positioning essential in this category.
Typical dosage and formats
Typical briefs specify 160–320 mg of standardised extract daily, usually in softgels, or equivalent powdered-extract doses in capsules. It pairs routinely with zinc, which carries authorised claims for normal testosterone levels and maintenance of normal hair, and with biotin for hair positioning, giving the finished product compliant claim routes.
UK and EU regulatory position
Saw palmetto is established in UK and EU supplements with no novel food concerns. Its own claims sit on the on-hold botanical list, while prostate-related therapeutic language belongs to registered herbal medicines, a line supplement artwork must not cross. The practical compliant structure carries claims through partner actives: zinc’s authorised claims for normal testosterone and hair, and biotin’s for hair maintenance… our regulatory review sets exact wording at artwork stage.
