UK Supplement Ingredient Trends: Inside The Formulation Index
The Formulation Index
Every month, more than 900 formulation enquiries land with Supplement Factory. Brands come to us with a product in mind and a question sitting behind it: what should we make, and what is going to move? Taken together, those briefs are one of the clearest live pictures of where the UK supplement market is actually heading. Not what a keyword tool guesses people might search for, but what real brands are committing real budgets to manufacture right now.
The Formulation Index is how we share that picture. It is a monthly, public read on the ingredients, formats and categories that UK brands are briefing us to make, and it exists because we are one of the few businesses in the country with a clear enough vantage point to publish it honestly.
Why we can see the trends before anyone else
Consumer demand data is everywhere. It is also, mostly, a lagging indicator. By the time an ingredient is trending on a retailer’s best-seller list, it was formulated twelve to eighteen months earlier. The decision that mattered, the moment a brand chose that active over another, happened long before the product reached a shelf.
That decision is exactly what we see. With more than 900 formulation enquiries every month, across sports nutrition, everyday wellness, beauty-from-within, gut health, cognitive and more, we sit at the point where intent becomes a product. We see which actives brands are asking for, which formats they are backing, and how those choices shift month on month. It is a leading signal, drawn from the earliest commercial commitment in the whole supply chain.
What the Index is, and why you can trust it
The Formulation Index reports the share of our formulation quotes that included each ingredient, format and category in the month. If an active appears in half of the formulations we quoted, it shows at fifty per cent. Alongside each figure we publish the month-on-month move, so you can see what is rising, what is cooling and what is entirely new.
Three principles keep it trustworthy. First, it is our own data: every figure traces back to a real formulation quoted to a real client on our own systems, aggregated anonymously, with nothing scraped, modelled or bought in. Second, it is actives only: fillers, sweeteners, flavours, carriers and packaging are recognised and deliberately excluded, so the Index reflects the active ingredients brands actually choose rather than the excipients that turn up in almost everything. Third, each ingredient is counted once per formulation, and revised or superseded quotes are never double-counted, so a single big project cannot distort the board.
The result is a demand signal you can act on with confidence, published the same way every month so the comparison from one edition to the next is genuine.
Who it is for, and why it is powerful for your next product
If you are building a supplement brand, the Index is a planning tool. Before you lock a formulation, it tells you whether you are moving with the market or against it, whether the active you are considering is gaining ground or slipping, and which formats are winning the categories you care about. That is the difference between launching into demand and launching on a hunch.
It is just as useful for the brand that wants to stand apart. Seeing what everyone is crowding into is the fastest way to spot the white space no one is serving yet. Either way, you are reading the market from the manufacturing side, where the earliest and hardest commitments are made, rather than from the noise downstream.
Use it to pressure-test an idea, to brief your team, to build the case for your next launch, or simply to stay close to a category that never stops moving. The board refreshes continuously, and a written read is published every month to put the numbers in context.
An open invitation to our fellow British manufacturers
We want to be clear about something that might seem counterintuitive: we welcome other UK manufacturers using this tool, and we mean it.
Our view is simple. British manufacturing is the best in the world, and supplements are no exception. The standards our industry works to, the quality of the raw materials we insist on, the rigour of our testing and the craft in our formulation are a genuine national strength. We are at the cutting edge of an evolution in how supplements are made, and we would rather share the map than guard it.
So if you are a fellow manufacturer, take the Index and use it. Let it sharpen your conversations with your own clients. Let it lift the standard of what gets made in Britain. A rising tide of quality, British-made supplements is good for every serious maker in this country, and good for the reputation of UK manufacturing on the world stage. We would far rather compete on quality with peers who are as committed to it as we are than watch the category cede ground to cheaper, weaker product made elsewhere. Join us in keeping quality, British-made supplements firmly on the map.
