UK Supplement Trends — August 2026: the base cooled

Part of The Formulation Index, Supplement Factory’s monthly read on what UK brands are actually briefing us to make.

August was a step back from a hot July, but the way it cooled is the real story. The classic vitamin-and-mineral base, which had surged across the board in July, gave up ground almost everywhere: Magnesium slipped eight points to 50%, Zinc eased six, and Vitamin C and Vitamin B6 both fell eleven. When the whole base moves down together like this, it is the base itself being trimmed, not any single ingredient falling out of favour.

Ingredient in focus: L-Theanine

While the base cooled, the functional actives rose against it, and L-Theanine led them. It climbed eight points to 26% of all quotes, its highest share in our record, capping a year-long ascent from single digits. Creatine reached 21% and Electrolytes appeared as the month’s notable new entry at 9%. The pattern is unmistakable: demand did not disappear so much as rotate, out of the everyday multivitamin stack and toward functional actives with a specific benefit story. L-Theanine’s record month is the clearest single marker of that shift.

What else moved

The category view said it plainly: Minerals and Vitamins were the heaviest decliners of the month, while Amino Acids and Botanicals gained. Set against July, when Magnesium, Zinc and the B-vitamins all surged double digits, August reads as a cooling and a rotation rather than a collapse.

What it means for brands

August points to the structural direction of the whole year: the market is rotating from the generic multivitamin base toward specific, benefit-led functional actives. For a brand planning its next product, that is the signal that matters. The everyday base is necessary but no longer sufficient; the growth, and the differentiation, is in the functional layer, calm, focus, hydration, recovery and cognitive, that consumers now actively seek. Build the base, but lead with the function.

That is where a year of data leaves us: a stable, Magnesium-anchored base, and a steady, structural shift toward functional wellness. It is the clearest guide we can offer to what UK brands will build next.
