What it is
Taurine is a sulphur-containing amino acid found abundantly in the body, particularly in muscle, heart and brain tissue. Unlike most amino acids it is not used to build protein; it plays roles in osmoregulation, bile salt formation and cellular calcium handling. Commercially it is best known from energy drinks, but it appears across performance, longevity and cardiovascular-support briefs.
Forms and sourcing
Supplement taurine is a synthetic, vegan-suitable crystalline powder of 98.5%+ purity produced under food-grade GMP. It is inexpensive, highly water-soluble and essentially tasteless at typical doses, which makes it one of the easiest actives to formulate with.
Benefits and evidence
Research interest in taurine spans exercise performance, cardiovascular markers and, more recently, healthy ageing. Human studies typically use 500 mg to 3 g per day. The evidence base is active but not yet reflected in any authorised claims, so product positioning should stay measured.
Typical dosage and formats
Typical inclusions run 500–2,000 mg per serving; energy drink convention is 1,000 mg per can. Taurine’s solubility and stability suit powders, stick packs, liquids and shots particularly well, and it presses and encapsulates without difficulty. It is a natural fit alongside caffeine, B vitamins and electrolytes in energy and hydration formulations.
UK and EU regulatory position
Taurine is a permitted, established food ingredient in the UK and EU with a long history of use in energy drinks and supplements, and safety assessments support intakes well above typical formulation levels. There are no authorised EFSA health claims for taurine, so compliant labelling cannot attribute energy or performance effects to taurine itself; formulators usually carry those claims through B vitamins, caffeine or carbohydrate-electrolyte content in the same product.
