Lallemand Expands Enzyme & Microbial Portfolio, Bolsters US Manufacturing

Virginia, United States — 06 August 2026

Lallemand has finalised its acquisition of BIO-CAT Enzymes & Microbials, a US-based developer and manufacturer of enzymes, probiotics, and microbial technologies. This strategic transaction significantly enhances Lallemand's functional ingredient portfolio and expands its production capabilities within the United States. The deal, between two privately held, family-owned entities, brings together complementary expertise in fermentation and life science innovation, a critical factor for accelerated product development.

The integration is poised to reinforce Lallemand's market position across several key sectors, including dietary supplements, food ingredients, animal nutrition, and industrial biotechnology. While financial terms were not disclosed, the acquisition signals a continued trend of consolidation within the ingredients sector, driven by a need to broaden technology platforms and offer more integrated solutions to a demanding market. BIO-CAT, with over three decades in enzyme and microbial solution development, now combines with Lallemand's global fermentation expertise, which spans baking, brewing, and health ingredients.

The combined entity anticipates developing next-generation solutions for human health and food, leveraging expanded R&D resources and scientific capabilities. This is particularly relevant given the sustained growth in demand for enzyme technologies, probiotics, and other fermentation-derived ingredients. These ingredients are pivotal for manufacturers developing products that support digestive health, enable clean label processing, and contribute to functional nutrition. Lallemand CEO Antoine Chagnon stated the acquisition will reinforce their presence in dietary supplements and health ingredients, alongside increasing their production capacity in the US, allowing them to better meet customer requirements.

What this means for United Kingdom

UK supplement brand owners utilising enzymes or probiotics should anticipate potential shifts in supplier dynamics and product availability from key ingredient houses. Lallemand’s expanded portfolio might offer new formulation opportunities, but also requires vigilance on any changes to existing supply contracts or product specifications by Q1 2027. Increased competition among ingredient suppliers, driven by Lallemand's enhanced capabilities, could stabilise or even improve pricing on certain enzyme and probiotic strains over the next 12-18 months. Procurement teams should engage with Lallemand to understand the integrated product roadmap and any new MOQs for US-manufactured ingredients, especially for those targeting digestive health or gut microbiome claims in the UK market, ensuring compliance with FSA regulations.

The acquisition follows Lallemand's prior purchase of Solyve, a subsidiary of the InVivo group, further underscoring its commitment to advancing microbial solutions. Both Lallemand (headquartered in Montreal, Canada) and BIO-CAT (headquartered in Virginia, US) emphasised that this acquisition is an opportunity to accelerate innovation, while maintaining a shared commitment to science-based product development and long-term customer relationships, as reported by Food Ingredients First.
