Tufts University has launched the Innovation Hub for Food and Materials, a dedicated research and development facility in Medford, Massachusetts, designed to bridge the gap between early-stage food-tech research and commercial application. With interim facilities already operational and a fully equipped 17,000 square foot centre scheduled for completion in autumn 2026, the hub is set to provide essential infrastructure for bioprocessing, formulation, scale-up, and sensory testing. This strategic investment aims to lower entry barriers for emerging food-tech companies, academic researchers, and established players by providing shared access to expensive pilot-scale equipment and expert support.

The hub integrates critical stages of product development under one roof. It includes a BioLabs-operated incubator with 46 laboratory benches, alongside extensive facilities for cell culture, fermentation, and materials processing. A key feature is the 'technology sandbox,' allowing equipment developers to test bioreactors and extrusion systems within a broader production context. Furthermore, a test kitchen and sensory analysis facilities will enable real-world performance validation with chefs and consumers. Tufts has committed U$4.6 million in shared research infrastructure, supplemented by a U$2.1 million grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative.
